The CSLB Law and Business Exam

What score do I need to pass?

The CSLB does not publicly publish the exact passing score, as this is disclosed at the testing center. It's widely reported to be approximately 72%, which means you need roughly 83 out of 115 correct. Don't aim for the minimum but study to comfortably exceed it.

Where do I take the exam?

The exam is administered at PSI testing centers, not at CSLB offices. PSI has about 20 locations across California and additional locations nationwide. The Law and Business exam can be taken out of state, though trade exams must be completed in California or Oregon. You'll schedule your exam through PSI after your CSLB application is approved.

What happens if I fail?

You can retake the exam as many times as needed, there's no lifetime limit. The CSLB requires a minimum waiting period between attempts (typically about 3 weeks) to give you time to study. You'll need to pay the exam fee again for each retake. If you fail, your score will be shown so you can gauge how close you were.

Do I also need to take a trade exam?

Yes. Every contractor license applicant must pass both the Law and Business exam (same for everyone) and a trade-specific exam for their license classification. For a B license (General Building Contractor), that's the B General Building exam.

Study Strategy

How should I study for the Law and Business exam?

Start by reading the CSLB's official Law and Business Study Guide — it lists every topic area, its weight on the exam, and recommended resources. Then study the California Contractors License Law and Reference Book, focusing on the highest-weighted topics: Contract Requirements (21%), Employment Requirements (20%), Business Finances (15%), and Safety (14%). Use practice questions to identify gaps in your knowledge and to get comfortable with the question format.

How long should I study?

Most successful test-takers report studying for 2 to 6 weeks, depending on their background. If you already have experience running a contracting business, you may need less time on the business management topics and more on the specific legal details. If you're new to the industry, budget more time for the full reference book.

What topics should I prioritize?

Focus on the topics weighted most heavily: Contract Requirements and Execution (21%), Employment Requirements (20%), Business Finances (15%), and Safety (14%). Together these make up 70% of the exam. Within each topic, pay special attention to dollar thresholds, deadlines, notice periods, and penalties — these are the kinds of specific facts most frequently tested.

Where do the questions come from?

Questions are generated from the official California Contractors License Law and Reference Book (2026 edition) and reviewed for accuracy. Each question includes a code reference citing the specific statute or regulation being tested, and a page reference to the source document.

Are these the actual exam questions?

No. The CSLB does not release actual exam questions. These are practice questions designed to test the same concepts, laws, and regulations covered on the real exam. They are intended as a study aid, not a replica of the test.

What's the difference between the Simulate Exam and Practice All Questions modes?

Simulate Exam randomly selects 115 questions, matching the real exam format, and tracks your score so you can gauge your readiness. Practice All Questions shows you all available questions so you can work through them at your own pace, reviewing explanations as you go.
